SULTAN MURAD AND THE PIOUS DRUNKARD AND FORNICATOR.

Short Inspirational story.

Sultan Murad IV, ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1623 to 1640. He would anonymously go into public in civilian clothes, midst the people and see their state. One evening, he set out on his regular expedition into the city, he was feeling uneasy and wanted to go out. He was with his security personnel, walking along the streets until he reached a busy vicinity, he found a man lying on the ground. The sultan prodded him but he made no movement. He was dead. The people around him were going about on their own business and nobody seemed to care.
He was quiet disturbed by this and so he called out to people. Since he was in civilian clothes, they did not recognize him. When he enquired about the dead man and why nobody seems to care, they replied that he is a drunkard and a fornicator!

The Sultan said, "Is he not from the Ummah of Muhammad (saw)? Now help me carry him to his house."

Upon hearing this, they helped the sultan in carrying the dead man to his house but no one stayed there and left. Only the sultan and his assistant remained.
When the man's wife saw his dead body, she began weeping. She said to his dead body, "May Allah have mercy on you! O friend of Allah! I bear witness that you are from the pious ones."

The Sultan was bewildered. He said, "How is he from the pious ones when the people say such and such about him? So much so that no one even cared he was dead!"
With teary eyes she replied, “I was expecting that. My husband was a noble man. He would go to tavern every night and buy as much wine as he could. He would bring it home and thrown it down the drain. He would then say “I saved Muslims a little today” He would then go to the prostitute, give her some money and tell her to close her door till morning. He would then return home and say “I saved a youth and a young woman from a vice.” All the people would see him purchasing the wine and going to the prostitute, they would think wrong of him and talk about him.
One day I said to him, "When you die, there will be no one to bathe you, there will be no one to pray over you and there will be no one to bury you!"

He laughed and replied, "Don't fear, the Sultan of the believers, along with the pious ones shall pray over my body."

The Sultan began to cry. He said, "By Allah! He has said the truth, for I am Sultan Murad. Tomorrow we shall bathe him, pray over him and bury him."

And it so happened that the Sultan, the scholars, the pious people and the masses prayed over him.
We are too quick to judge people on what we see. We have no idea of what they are going through or what their intentions are. We do not know how close they are to Allah. Only Allah knows. It is a secret between them and Allah. Allah is all-Knowing and all-Hearing. He knows what is in everyone’s heart and who matters and who doesn’t.

Allah says In Glorious Quran:

"O you who believe, abstain from many of the suspicions. Some suspicions are sins. And do not be curious (to find out faults of others), and do not backbite one another. Does one of you like that he eats the flesh of his dead brother? You would abhor it. And fear Allah. Surely Allah is Most-Relenting, Very-Merciful." (49:12)

May Allah Protect us.
